Philosophy

The CNCB is defined by a scientific style—circuit-level questions, molecular interventions, mechanistic answers—rather than a single scientific or technological problem.

Our broad remit is to understand how the activity of nerve cells underpins our mental lives. Currently, we address this problem by investigating the fly as our model animal.

We are investigator driven. We encourage our researchers—at all levels—to follow their own instincts, ideas, and interests.

We believe that we are at our most productive and creative when we are invested in our own ideas.

We do not operate in monastic isolation but within a large research university that covers all disciplines.

We are a growing enterprise, made up of post-doctoral fellows, graduate students and group leaders.

We mean to be a ‘laser’ environment in which
ideas excite further ideas.
